Return to Book 1 – “The Fall”

RAID French Anti Terror Unit “Research, Assistance, Intervention, Deterrence

I picked RAID as the basis for some of my story as they were convenient as one of heroes of the story (Lt Sacha Laurent) had to be a military OR police officer. Clearly RAID was an excellent choice as they are an amazing organisation protecting the French and people of Europe from many threats.

RAID has many outposts or “antennae” across France and RAID (Recherche, Assistance, Intervention, Dissuasion) has many missions. However, its main priority is to fight against organised crime and terrorism, and it operates in a shadowy world where the Police just cannot enter in the same way.  The operatives are recruited from various sources and the Strasbourg outpost would have two officers – A commander and his deputy – 14 operators, a logistical support agent and a secretary. On a National level RAID has a total strength of around 450 men and women, approx. 180 of which are in Bièvres, the rest in the regional branches. The Bièvres (Paris) unit was divided into three main sections with about 60 members each. The first section deals with the usual tasks of special forces: intervention, monitoring, protection. The second section is the research and development which studies techniques and collects information. The third section deals with the psychological aspects of the interventions and oversees negotiations and crisis management. It also provides psychological support for the policemen in the unit and in the whole French Police.

I also did some in-depth research into working out what the RAID operatives were armed with, but it is pretty tricky to find out!

The RAID organisation had bought five the PVP trucks in 2015 but in my story, they had just taken delivery of the two more PVP XL’s. They XL is an 11-ton beast of a machine with a payload capacity of 3 tons or 9.2m3 and an 800km range. it was large and fast and could take on most threats with a 12.7mm calibre roof mounted machine gun. It also can have a very modern HITROLE Light Fire Control System (FCS) which consisted of a modular sighting system including a Day TV camera, Infra-Red (IR) camera for night vision and an eye safe Laser Range Finder (LRF). I think it reality they don’t have the system on but in the 2nd book they wil get some serious action!

There is some evidence that they carry quite a variety of possible weapons for personal protection or other uses. I worked out a few and picked some that could be used;

Sig Sauer SP2022 9mm pistols

Beretta M12 9mm submachine guns

Heckler & Koch G36 5.56mm assault rifles

Ruger Mini-14 GB rifles

The Mini-14 is a lightweight semi-automatic rifle. They were manufactured by Sturm, Ruger & Co and based on the M14 rifle as an essentially scaled-down version. The Mini-14 GB “government barrel” models feature a side-folding stock and a generous 30-round magazine. They would certainly be useful. . The Heckler & Koch G36 5.56mm assault rifle can have a 3x magnified sight with calibrated bullet drop compensation markings for 200 to 800m.
